I’ve authored an 8×8 libary in the public domain at http://code.google.com/p/panel8×8. Should be easy to adapt to your board.

I was working down this path already, 74hc595 and everything. Hopefully you’ve published more of what you were up against.

Now I see what you mean, you have to click on “change” to enter the captcha. That’s a bit counterintuitive.

Looks nice – could you elaborate about the differences for this version?

Have you looked into RainbowDuino at all? How does your unit compare? I have a rainbowduino on order…
