Maybe I can help you shine a bit?

I've authored an 8x8 libary in the public domain at http://code.google.com/p/panel8x8. Should be easy to adapt to your board.

I was working down this path already, 74hc595 and everything. Hopefully you've published more of what you were up against.

Now I see what you mean, you have to click on "change" to enter the captcha. That's a bit counterintuitive.

I know about the RainbowDuino, oh yes. How could I ignore it ;-)

I've added a section to the end of this post with a short comparison.

I'll have to check the captcha issue. Never occurred to me before, maybe because I'm always logged in, hmmm.

Looks nice - could you elaborate about the differences for this version?

Have you looked into RainbowDuino at all? How does your unit compare? I have a rainbowduino on order...

PS- The captcha on your comments is not visible once allready logged in. It is a bit confusing and won't let you comment without it.
